Coquetdale, to the north of Hadrian's Wall. A remarkable archaeological landscape. View north from Lordenshaws hillfort (a few centuries BCE and with a Romano-British farmstead), with some of the famous prehistoric rock carvings, much older, in the foreground. Dere Street, on which sits Binchester to the south, runs to the west up into Caledonia, Pictland, Scotland, via Chew Green. Devil's Causeway, another Roman road, runs through Low Learchild to the east. A connecting road runs through the middleground of this view. The hills in the distance are the Cheviots.
Our project to excavate Binchester takes in this marvelous region.
